Mountaintop Unity is affiliated with the Association of Unity Churches
- Canada, the International Association of Unity Churches and Unity,
the publishers of Daily Word. Over 900 Unity churches and
centres worldwide teach the Unity way of life to eager Unity truth
students.

We encourage you to explore and apply Unity teachings based on
your own spiritual understanding. We believe this spiritual understanding
is enhanced through reflective prayer and meditation. The five basic
ideas that make up the Unity belief system are:
- God is the source and creator of all. There is no other enduring power. God is good and present everywhere.
- We are spiritual beings, created in God's image. The spirit of God lives within each person; therefore, all people
are inherently good.
- We create our life experiences through our way of thinking and feeling.
- There is power in affirmative prayer, which we believe increases our connection to God.
- Knowledge of these spiritual principles is not enough. We must live them.
Unity is a spiritual approach to transforming our lives. We teach
the effective, daily application of the principles of Truth taught
and exemplified by the Master Teachers. We promote a way of life
that leads to health, prosperity, happiness, and peace of mind.
Unity is often called positive, practical Christianity.

What
is God? (click to display/hide answers)
|
God is an energy and power within the universe that is everywhere
present. The presence of God is unlimited potential, unconditionally
loving and the infinite source of all good. God is not an
old man up in the clouds that is judging our every move and
deciding what our afterlife will be like. We have nothing
to fear from God, for God is Love.
|
What
about meditation? (click to display/hide answers)
|
It is through meditation that we come into a state of God
communion and thereby experience a greater sense of unity
of all life. Unity honours all forms of meditation, from creative
visualization to the more traditional mind stilling techniques.
We often call meditation "the Silence". Our co-founder,
Charles Fillmore, would frequently enter the Silence when
he would "go to headquarters" for God-inspired guidance.
|
What is affirmative prayer? (click to display/hide answers)
|
Unity honours and practices several forms of prayer. We teach
a unique and powerful form of prayer called affirmative prayer
that was used by our co-founder Myrtle Fillmore to miraculously
heal herself of tuberculosis. An affirmation is a verbal or
written statement that states the Truth that we desire. It
is a true act of faith to put aside our doubts; in order to
"act as if" our highest aspirations is already a
reality. Therefore, an affirmation can be any statement, act,
or gesture that affirms the reality of our intentions.
|
What about Jesus and Christ? (click to display/hide answers)
|
Jesus of Nazareth was a human through which the Christ principle
expressed itself on Earth. We view Jesus as a great example
for all of humanity, rather than the great exception. Unity
teaches that the spirit of God lived in Jesus, just as the
potential for this same expression lies within every person.
We all have the potential to express the perfect pattern of
Christ consciousness in everyday life. The Christ is a universal
principle rather than a person to worship and be saved by.
The Christ is the principle of God expressing through humanity.
|
What is the role of the Bible in Unity? (click to display/hide answers)
|
Unity uses the Bible as a metaphysical textbook and tool that
demonstrates how we can evolve in consciousness. Scriptures
and sacred texts from many world religions come alive when
they are understood by us as a helpful guide for today’s
spiritual experiences.
|
What about sin and salvation? (click to display/hide answers)
|
We believe that sin is simply our separation from God, the
Good. This happens in consciousness whenever we "miss
the mark" of spiritual perfection. A sin is merely an
activity that produces an undesirable effect in our lives.
In other words, we are punished by our sins and not for them.
We believe that salvation happens whenever we turn our thoughts
away from fear, anxiety, worry, and doubt to thoughts of love,
harmony, joy, and peace. Therefore, it is not something that
occurs after we die and go to heaven. The "fall"
from grace takes place in consciousness whenever we slide
back into negative habits of thinking.
|
What about heaven and hell? (click to display/hide answers)
|
Unity believes that heaven and hell are states of consciousness
in Mind. We experience Heaven when we are in harmony with
the life that surrounds us. Hell is a state of mind that we
experience when we don't understand why something unpleasant
is happening to us. We can choose to create our own heaven
or hell on Earth through our free will.
|
What about evil? (click to display/hide answers)
|
Unity does not deny the appearance of evil. We teach that
evil does not exist as a force or power in the world. That
which is called evil is merely the obstruction of the one
power which is God or Spirit. The obstruction of Spirit's
expression always occurs in the mind through the holding of
false beliefs. According to Unity, the only presence acting
in the universe is God, which is always good. Evil is merely
the way that we withhold our expression and experience of
that good, by accepting false beliefs in our minds.
|
Do you believe in the devil? (click to display/hide answers)
|
Since the only power acting anywhere is God, the devil simply
cannot exist as a force acting in opposition to God's expression
through Spirit. Therefore, there really is no devil. There
is only the manifestation of falsely held beliefs within our
minds, which produces the appearance of some sinister invisible
force acting in our lives. To blame unpleasant conditions
and circumstances on the devil, or anyone else, is a way of
avoiding responsibility for our own experience of life.
|
What about death and reincarnation? (click to display/hide answers)
|
Unity teaches that life and Spirit are eternal. Our physical
bodies operate within a natural cycle of birth and death.
Even though we have a body, we are not just our body. We are
the divine Christ Spirit that animates our body, and that
Life is infinite and immortal. As we increasingly manifest
our spiritual nature, our underlying fear of death begins
to dissolve and our experience of life becomes more joyous.
Unity neither endorses nor rejects any particular theory or
concept of reincarnation. Since life is eternal, there are
many possibilities for its evolvement after the experience
of physical death.
|
Do we believe in miracles? (click to display/hide answers)
|
Everything that occurs in our lives is simply the out-picturing
of our consciousness operating through the spiritual law.
Therefore, those events that seem to be miraculous in nature
are actually the spiritual law acting at a level beyond our
awareness. As we evolve our consciousness, what previously
seemed miraculous becomes a natural, normal and understandable
way of life. In actuality, there is only one miracle, this
is Life itself!

the world where people discover and practice the Unity way
of life. We address physical, mental, and emotional needs
through affirmative prayer and spiritual education. We serve

who use Unity teachings as their primary path of spiritual
growth. Our sincere desire is to create spiritually aware
organizations that are nondiscriminatory and support diversity.

Is Unity a denomination? (click to display/hide answers)
|
There are more than 900 Unity churches, centres and study
groups affiliated with Unity and the Association of Unity
Churches. To this degree Unity is called a Christian and New
Thought denomination. However, the majority of the work done
by the original Unity organization at Unity Village, Missouri
involves prayer, publishing, and education services to people
of all faiths. These trans-denominational services include
the 24 hour prayer ministry - Silent Unity, Daily Word - the
inspirational monthly magazine, retreats, and education classes
that are open to everyone and teach Unity principles in an
interfaith setting.
|
Is there any connection between Unity and Unitarianism? (click to display/hide answers)
|
No, there is no connection-although there is sometimes confusion
because of the similarity of the names. Each is a distinct
organization with its own set of beliefs and practices.
|
Is Unity New Age? (click to display/hide answers)
|
Unity is a New Thought philosophy. We have found that many
people with New Age leanings are attracted to Unity. Some
of Unity’s spiritual tools such as meditation are also
practiced by those who consider themselves New Age; Unity
does not consider itself a New Age religion. Unity honours
all paths that lead to God, whether they are Christian, Jewish,
Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, New Age or any other spiritual tradition.
|
Is Unity a cult? (click to display/hide answers)
|
No. Unity teaches that each individual is completely empowered
to take responsibility for his or her own life. Unity highly
discourages the following of or dependence upon any one person,
including our co-founders Charles and Myrtle Fillmore or any
present ministers or teachers. Unity challenges us to think
for ourselves and believe only what resonates as true for
us. Each one of us must look into our own heart for Truth.

The following Diversity Statement was adopted by Unity and the
Association of Unity Churches on January 23, 1995. Mountaintop Unity
believes that honouring all forms of diversity is sacred.
We believe that all people are created with sacred worth. Therefore,
we recognize the importance of serving all people within the Unity
family in spiritually and emotionally caring ways. We strive for
our ministries, publications, and programs to reach out to all who
seek Unity support and spiritual growth. It is imperative that our
ministries and outreaches be free of discrimination on the basis
of race, color, gender, age, creed, religion, national origin, ethnicity,
physical disability, or sexual orientation. Our sincere desire is
to ensure that all Unity organizations are non-discriminatory and
support diversity.
In our effort to reach out to all people as did our Way-Shower,
Jesus Christ, we support the modification of our facilities to make
them accessible to all people, regardless of physical challenges;
the translation of our materials into Braille and other languages;
and respect for the wonderful variety of human commitments and relationships.
We encourage ministers, teachers, and others within Unity to honour
the strength of diversity within their spiritual communities. It
is with love and in celebration of our unity, in the midst of our
wondrous diversity, that we affirm this position.

This is the Joint Statement for Peace adopted by Unity after 9/11.
Unity stands for peace in the presence of conflict; for love in
the presence of hatred; for forgiveness in the presence of injury.
Unity honours the many names for God, the many paths to God and
the many ways to worship God. For there is only one power and one
presence of God and God loves each of us equally. It is therefore
the position of the International Association of Unity Churches
and Unity to urge all nations, their leaders and their people to
turn to God (by whatever the name) for guidance during these challenging
times. In Unity we pursue peace, not war, for this is what honours
the God of all our faith traditions. Unity stands for peace in our
lifetime.
How can you help us carry on this important work for humanity?
We invite you to get involved at Mountaintop Unity by serving as
love in action through our Volunteer
Ministries.
